Politeknik Kota Melaka (PKM) was established on the 1st of January 1999. For the first 4 months, it operated from Sekolah Menengah Teknik Bukit Piatu, Melaka. In April 1999 PKM moved to its permanent campus at No 2, Jalan PPM 10, Plaza Pandan Malim, Balai Panjang, 75250 Melaka.
PKM comprises 13 units of fully modified shop lots. The buildings belong to the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia and are fully equipped with the basic amenities and facilities required by an institution of higher learning.
PKM is the 11th polytechnic to be established by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia. The first batch of 197 students was accepted in July 1999. They were offered 4 major courses, namely, the Certificate in Civil Engineering, the Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, the Certificate in Electrical Engineering and the Certificate in Business Studies. In January 2004, the Commerce Department added the Certificate in Book Keeping (SPK) course to the list.
Currently Politeknik Kota, Melaka is under the patronage of the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.
On the 7th of November 2007, the new logo of Politeknik Kota Melaka was launched by the Deputy Director-General of the Polytechnic Management Sector, Tuan Hj Mokhlis bin Jaafar, in line with the efforts of giving Politeknik Kota, Melaka a more impressive corporate image.
